“When in doubt, don’t refer yet. Invite them to another event first and get to know them better.”

Outliers Referral Honor Code

Outliers is a referral-based community built on trust, shared values, and a genuine desire to contribute positively to Guatemala.

Because of this, every referral carries responsibility.

1. Referrals Require Real Trust

When you refer someone to Outliers, you should recommend someone whose character you trust and respect. As we say in Spanish, refer someone “por quien pondrías las manos en el fuego.”

This means:

• You know them beyond a brief conversation

• You have observed their values, behavior, or work

• You believe they will contribute positively to the community

If you have only met someone once at an event, that is not enough to refer them.

2. Minimum Participation Before Referring

Only members who have attended at least three Outliers events may refer new applicants.

This ensures that the person referring others:

• Understands the culture of the community

• Knows what kind of people belong in Outliers

• Can responsibly represent the group

3. Your Reputation Is Attached to Your Referral

When you refer someone to Outliers, you are personally vouching for them.

If the person you refer:

• behaves disrespectfully

• creates conflict or negativity

• copies or harms another member’s business

• violates the collaborative spirit of the community

they may be removed from the community.

In serious cases, the person who referred them may also be removed.

This is not meant to punish anyone. It exists to protect the trust and integrity of the community.

4. What We Look For in Outliers Members

Before referring someone, ask yourself if they are:

• Builders, expats, founders, or people creating something meaningful + positive for the country

• Generous with knowledge, introductions, and opportunities

• Curious and open to different perspectives

• People who want to improve Guatemala, not just criticize it

• Collaborative rather than competitive with other members

Outliers is not just a networking group. It is a community of people who take action.

5. Quality Over Quantity

A smaller community of the right people is always better than a large community of the wrong ones.

Please refer carefully. Every member shapes the culture of Outliers. A new applicant must be referred by two existing Outliers members.
